What is electro-acupuncture?
Electroacupuncture (electro-acupuncture) is an acupuncture technique that pairs of acupuncture needles are attached to a electro-acupuncture stimulator, which generates electric pulses. It has been used for a wide array of conditions, especially for musculo-skeleton conditions. It usually has good result for pain relieving.
Electroacupuncture and traditional acupuncture – the difference
Both uses the same points as traditional acupuncture.
Electro-acupuncture use electric current to stimulate the acupuncture points. While traditional acupuncture don’t use electricity current, but only with traditional acupuncture techniques. It manually stimulate the needles and promote Qi (vital energy).
Generally two needles are selected to connect to the stimulator. A few pairs of points can be stimulated at the same time. After you get the “De Qi”(de Chi, means “get or feel the energy”) sensation, your acupuncturist will turn on the electro-stimulator.

Contradictions of electroacupuncture
Electroacupuncture is generally considered safe and well-tolerated. However, there are some contraindications and precautions to be aware of when considering electroacupuncture:
1. Cancer or Tumors: Electroacupuncture should not be used directly on or near tumors or cancerous lesions. It’s crucial to inform your acupuncturist about any cancer diagnosis and ongoing treatments.
2. Epilepsy or Seizure Disorders: Individuals with a history of epilepsy or seizure disorders should exercise caution when considering electroacupuncture. Electrical stimulation may trigger seizures in sensitive individuals.
3. Implanted Medical Devices: Patients with metal implants in the area where acupuncture is intended should consult with their healthcare provider and acupuncturist to determine if electroacupuncture is safe.
4. Cardiac Conditions: Patients with pacemakers or other implanted electrical devices should proceed with caution with electroacupuncture, and should alway with fully qualified experienced acupuncturist.
5. Metal Allergies: Some individuals may have allergies or sensitivities to the metals used in acupuncture needles. It’s essential to inform your practitioner if you have a known metal allergy or sensitivity.
6. Skin Conditions: Electroacupuncture should not be performed over broken or irritated skin, skin infections, or rashes. The electrical stimulation may worsen these conditions.
Does electroacupuncture hurt?
Same as traditional acupuncture, you may feel the “De Qi” sensation (reported as pressure, slightly tingling sensation). Once the electric stimulator has been turned on, you may just feel the pulse without pain from the needle.
Is electroacupuncture safe?
Same as acupuncture, electro-acupuncture has little risk. Occasionally bleeding bruising or soreness may occur at the insertion sites. However, with a good acupuncturist, the risk can be reduced to minimal and usually no damage to your body.
