Acupuncture for Lower Back Pain

A Gentle, Natural Path to Healing with Acupuncture

At Almond Wellness Centre, we use acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to provide drug-free pain relief. These time-tested techniques work beautifully on their own or alongside your current western treatments to support your body’s natural ability to heal and recover.

Understanding Your Back Pain from a Holistic View

While conventional medicine often focuses on the site of pain, we look at the whole picture. We want to understand not just where it hurts, but why. In TCM, pain is often seen as a blockage or imbalance in your body’s vital energy, or Qi (pronounced “Chee”). When Qi doesn’t flow smoothly through its pathways (meridians), pain and stiffness can result.

We see back pain typically falling into a few patterns:

  • The “Stuck” Pain (Stagnation): This is often a sharp, stabbing pain from a recent injury or strain. It might feel stiff and actually get worse when you rest.

  • The “Heavy & Achy” Pain (Cold/Damp Obstruction): This type feels worse in cold, damp weather and in the morning. You might feel swollen or heavy, and warmth often brings relief.

  • The “Dull & Tired” Pain (Deficiency): This is usually a chronic, dull ache that improves with rest. It’s often linked to your overall energy levels and vitality.

By identifying your unique pattern, we can create a treatment plan that addresses the root cause, not just the symptoms.

Backed by Science, Guided by Compassion

You can feel confident in your choice. Research supports acupuncture as an effective option for back pain. An overview of scientific reviews concluded that acupuncture is more effective for pain relief and improving function than no treatment. It also found that acupuncture, when added to other care, provides significant improvements for chronic low back pain. [Source: Acupuncture for Low Back Pain: An Overview of Systematic Reviews]

Your Personalised Treatment Plan for Back Pain

Your journey with us starts with a conversation. We’ll take the time to listen and use a combination of assessments—including orthopaedic tests, palpation, and traditional Chinese pulse and tongue diagnosis—to understand your pain fully.

Your treatment plan is tailored just for you and may include:

  • Traditional Acupuncture or Electro-acupuncture: To unblock Qi, relive pain, and reduce inflammation (for inflammatory conditions such as ankylosing spondylitis).

  • Moxibustion: A deeply warming therapy that applies penetrating heat to injured muscles and tissues to relieve pain and promote recovery.
  • Therapeutic Cupping: To increase blood flow and release deep muscle tension.

  • Acupressure (Chinese Deep Tissue Massage): To loosen tight muscles and promote relaxation.

  • Infra-red Heat Therapy & Stretching: To soothe tissues and improve mobility.

  • Chinese Herbal Medicine: For chronic arthritis related back pain.
  • Lifestyle & Self-Care Guidance: We believe in empowering you with practical tips for posture, stress management, and specific stretching exercises to support your healing at home.

Your Back Pain Questions, Answered

Q: I just hurt my back yesterday – is it too soon for acupuncture?

A: Not at all! Acupuncture is excellent for acute injuries and can help reduce pain and inflammation right from the start.

Q: For a new injury, should I use heat or ice?

A: We generally recommend icing the area for 20 minutes every 2 hours within the first 24-48 hours. After that, you can switch to heat to relax the muscles.

Q: Can acupuncture help with a bulging or herniated disc?

A: Yes. We can provide significant relief for pain caused by disc issues. We’ll also work with you on posture, specific stretches, and strengthening exercises to help prevent the pain from returning.

Q: I’ve tried many treatments for my chronic back pain with little success. How are you different?

A: We hear this often, and it’s why we take a different approach. We combine Western and Eastern diagnostics to get a complete picture of your health. Your treatment won’t be generic; it will be a personalised plan that may blend multiple therapies (like acupuncture, cupping, and tailored exercises) and address underlying factors like stress and diet that could be contributing to your pain.

Q: How many sessions will I need?

A: It varies, but as a general guide:

  • Acute pain: We often suggest 2 sessions per week initially.

  • Chronic pain: Most people start with 1 session per week for 4-5 weeks. Many notice a significant improvement after this initial period. From there, we can discuss a maintenance plan to keep you feeling great.
