High FSH and acupuncture Chinese medicine

Want to try IVF but have high FSH?

Diagnosed as Pre-matured ovarian failure – early menopause?

Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine may help

Many of our clients are told that they have high Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH), or they are diagnosed are early menopause, or pre-matured ovarian failure, or Primary Ovarian Insufficiency (POI).

High FSH is linked to poor egg quality and conception rates, both stand-alone or in IUI/IVF cycle. They are told not able to conceive naturally or if they choose to do IVF, their IVF specialist won’t be able to help them unless their FSH level are below 12, because their ovaries will have no or less response to the IVF drugs.

Symptoms of high FHS

The following symptoms may indicate that you FSH is high:

  • Irregular periods or periods stopping – Common reason for realising something is not right.
  • Infertility – obviously
  • Hot flushes and night sweats
  • Poor sleep
  • Palpitations

High FSH, what does it mean to me?

Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) is a hormonal message from the high levels – your pituitary gland.  FSH stimulates the growth of ovarian follicles in your ovaries for ovulation. If your FSH is high often means that your ovaries are not responding or not respond enough.

If your ovaries are not responding to FSH, external FSH (as most IVF drugs) won’t be able to stimulate your ovaries for necessary follicle growth.

Can acupuncture Chinese medicine reduce my FSH?

Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine can reduce stress, improve blood flow to your ovaries, and provide more nutrients to your ovaries. Consequently improve your ovaries’ response to pituitary gland, and ovulation may happen.

Acupuncture has been used in eastern Asian countries for thousands of years and suggested as an effective approach to managing menopausal vasomotor symptoms . It has been found effective in reducing the hot flush severity in women with breast cancer and in perimenopausal and postmenopausal women . However, there has been no systematic investigation on its therapeutic effects on Primary Ovarian Insufficiency (POI).

A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis research includes 10 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving 888 patients in comparing CHM with HRT for the treatment of POF. The pooled data showed an improvement in symptoms in the Chinese Herbal Medicine group compared to that of the HRT group. FSH levels were significantly lower in patients treated with CHM compared to that of patients treated with HRT … There was no significant difference (P > 0.05) observed in E2 and LH levels when CHM and HRT were compared. This research suggest Chinese herbal medicine may relieve symptoms of POF (Premature Ovarian Failure) partly through decreasing serum FSH levels. This may provide guidance for future studies. – https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1876382014000092

So, how do acupuncture Chinese medicine manage patients with high FSH?

Traditional Chinese Medicine TCM and acupuncture doesn’t have the concept of FSH for the obvious reason. However you acupuncturist and TCM practitioner may be able make a diagnosis and treatment based on your presenting symptoms and some subtle signs, such as your pulse and tongue.

Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine treatment are rather good in reduce your symptoms, instead of solely looking to reduce FSH numbers.

After treatment often patients feel better with:

  • Less stress and feel less anxious
  • Less abdominal discomfort (pain in the ovaries, cramping)
  • Better sleep
  • More energy
  • Less hot
  • More regulate period

Patients may be qualified for IVF or even achieve pregnancy naturally afterwards.

Record Your Basal Body Temperature (BBT)

What is Basal Body Temperature (BBT)

Basal Body Temperature (BBT) is the temperature that you are at rest. It is the lowest temperature of your body.

Why should I check my basal body temperature (BBT)

Your basal body temperature (BBT) stays low from the start of your period until your ovulate. Once you’ve ovulated, your BBT raises and stays high up to your next period.  Therefore, by measuring and recording your basal body temperature (BBT), you know whether you’ve ovulated on that cycle. And if you do, when do you ovulate.

If checking and recording BBT properly,  your fertility practitioners may also detect your fertility energy changes reflected from BBT chart. Your acupuncturist may adjust your acupuncture TCM treatment according to those subtle changes.

How to measure and record your BBT:

BBT Chart

  • You should have at least 3 hours of continuous sleep before measuring your basal body temperature.
  • You need to prepare a normal digital thermometer. If you use a glass thermometer, you should shake the temperature the day before using.
  • It’s best to have an alarm clock and try to measure at the same time every day when you wake up (not when you get up). It should be the same on weekends.
  • If you wake up too early or too late, it is best to make a note on the chart of the day.
  • Measure your body temperature directly when you wake up in the morning (do not do anything before this –like going to the bathroom or give your husband a hug…).
  • There are two ways to measure body temperature: oral or transvaginal
    • Oral: Put the thermometer deeply between the root of the gum and face. Make sure your mouth is close when measuring;
    • Transvaginal: Transvaginal will be more stable, temperature may be slightly higher than oral.
  • Record the temperature immediately after recording.
  • Draw a cross at the appropriate temperature and make a line chart.
  • If the temperature is between two numbers on the glass thermometer, always take the lower number.
  • Record anything like emotional stress and illness such as a cold, fever, etc.
  • You can download the mobile app for easy recording. We recommend Fertility Friend here
